Hayashi Sushi was pre-selected to be our go to place for lunch Monday, after a mid-morning medical appointment in New Westminster.  We (as a threesome) arrived at the restaurant about 11:30 am, and were fortunate to find a parking spot very near the restaurant (the lot was busy).

Once inside, seated (at a booth), and able to take a look around, I found the premises and setup to be very clean and neat, walls and furniture warmly-coloured, with small, colourful designs on the walls, behind and above the booths.  There is booth seating on each side of the restaurant (4-5 booths on each side), and rows of small, 2-chair-size tables arranged in-between,  running down the center of the place.  We found the ambiance rather 'cozy'.

We were greeted upon entering, and service was prompt and cordial throughout our stay.

    The food:

--  sashimi - assorted sashimi (15 pcs - with salmon, sockeye salmon, tuna, clam, a white fish, and egg) - it looked good, and tasted the same - nicely-cut pieces, very fresh tasting.
--  sushi - dynamite cone, and California combo (with California rolls, and assorted nigiri sushi - egg, clam, shrimp, a white fish, and salmon) - fine presentation of well-made, fresh tasting ingredients - really enjoyed the distinctive flavours, and their sushi rice was sure good, and not overly-proportioned to the other ingredients.
--  tempura - seafood tempura (shrimp, salmon, stick crabmeat, and tai) - first taste of an assorted seafood tempura, and it was very well-made - the tempura batter so flavourful and crispy, the fish and other ingredients inside, cooked perfectly, warm, moist, and tasty.
--  udon - seafood yaki udon (side note:  the bill says chicken yaki udon, it was actually ordered, but we received seafood - no problem or complaint from us, and it was not reflected in an extra charge on the bill) - udon noodles, shrimp, squid, mussel, crab leg, cabbage, broccoli, sweet corn, carrot, and stock - a nice presentation, and well-prepared - the stock, so 'light' and flavourful, with no salt or oily taste, noodles and other ingredients cooked just right, without anything overcooked.

We enjoyed our lunch at Hayashi Sushi -- food presentations were colourful, dishes very well-prepared, and the service perfectly fine.  It was definitely a "yum" experience, and they made some new fans.

It's probably been over 2 years since my last visit to Hayashi Sushi. Located in the Columbia Square Plaza in New Westminster, this cozy eatery serves up your typical Japanese fare and there's usually plenty of free parking available in the mall parking lot.

For my first revisit, I decided to order their Assorted Sashimi ($18.95 for 15 pieces) which was comprised of 3 pieces each of surf clam, snapper, wild salmon, tuna, and farmed Atlantic salmon. Overall, the sashimi was pretty good with my favourite pieces being the tuna and the salmon. However, the presentation leaves a bit to be desired. For the price, I'm used to there being a bit more effort in plating the sashimi in an aesthetically pleasing manner instead of just laying the pieces on a long plate.

On my return in January, I was in the mood for some nigiri and ordered Sockeye Salmon ($2.25), Saba ($1.75), Tai ($1.75), Toro ($2.25), Spicy Scallop ($2.95), and Unagi ($2.50). Although some of the nigiri pieces fell apart easily, I did really enjoy the flavour of the saba (mackerel) as well as how buttery the toro was (best of the bunch). The spicy scallop had some hot sauce on top and proved to be quite a kick.

There's almost nothing as simple or as pleasing as a good Unagi Don ($14.95). I mean... eel on rice - who would have thought? A fairly good portion size of tender unagi.

I've had the Nabeyaki Udon ($14.95) here in the past but I didn't remember the bowl being so large before. You get two pieces of prawn tempura (make sure to eat these first or pull them out of the soup so they don't get too soggy), veggies, chicken, egg yolk, narutomaki (spiral fish cake), and chewy/toothsome udon noodles.

One of the popular options here is their lunch boxes so I wound up ordering their Sashimi Lunch Box ($16.95) with chicken teriyaki, deep-fried gyoza, salad, 3 pieces of tuna sashimi and 3 pieces of Atlantic salmon sashimi. While the salad was just a bit meh, the cut up orange was next level. I enjoyed the fried meat dumpling because the filling was hot and the skin had a nice light crispness on the outside. However, it could have used a dipping sauce to accompany it. While the chicken was pretty good, I think they used a bit too much sauce. That being said, the teriyaki sauce does go well with the rice. Overall, a fairly generous amount of food with thick pieces of tuna sashimi and salmon sashimi that was melt-in-your-mouth tender.

On a few other visits, I stuck with simple things like their Tuna and Atlantic Salmon Sashimi ($13.95) which I remember as being smooth and tender. I've also had their Chirashi Don ($15.95) which is a good option if you're looking for something that has a lot of different sashimi components. The chirashi don included 3 pcs each of sockeye salmon, farmed Atlantic salmon, and tuna sashimi along with hokkigai, tamago, and 2 pcs of what I'm assuming was tai on top of a large serving of basic sushi rice.

Feeling a bit peckish on another visit, I decided to order a bunch of different items for lunch (knowing that I'd have to bring some home as leftovers)... BC Roll ($4.25), Hayashi Roll ($11.95), Sockeye Salmon Sashimi ($14.95), and Chicken Yakisoba ($10.95).

Their signature Hayashi Roll is a large California roll with unagi, salmon, avocado, and tobiko on the top and accompanied with teriyaki sauce. The only thing that I found wrong with this roll is that they cut the roll in very large slices which made it difficult to pick up and eat. Otherwise, it was a very pleasing roll.

Hand rolls or cones are known as Temaki and I tried their BC Cone ($3.25) as well as their Negitoro and Chopped Scallop Cones ($4.25 each). These were nicely prepared and tightly wrapped (the last thing you want is for a sushi cone to fall apart on you).

So, there you go... a very serviceable sushi place in New West that may not "wow" you but will probably have you coming back for more.

This Hayashi Sushi is located in a mall where you can catch quite a bit of Pokemon. However, there are only one Pokestop.  Its located close by to the Quay.

The restaurant is quite small. I am glad this place opens late till 11 pm. We ordered a boat and a sashimi plate. Wow the portion of the sashimi was quite big. For $17 dollar you have 16 pieces. Definitely cheaper than Vancouver prices. The boat was $33 but it was huge. We almost couldn't finish. We were so full that we couldn't go hunt any more Pokemon.

Sushi was pretty decent. But in terms of taste, it seems like some of the Vancouver ones can easily out beat it. I guess competition isn't as fierce in Vancouver.

The place is ran by Korean. I always like Korean People sushi. for their Nigiri, they are very generous on the salmon. So you can see the long Salmon tail.

I am not sure what has changed since I used to come here all of the time but it wasn't as great as it used to be. That's not to say that it was horrible, because it wasn't but it wasn't an experience I would gush over.

Price is on the high end of moderate. Food is what you expect from an average sushi place in Vancouver. Do not get the Chicken Teriyaki Donburi unless you want it to be swimming in sauce. By the end of the bowl, there is still a large pool of sauce at the end. It was pretty much impossible to eat without the rice being soaked in Teriyaki sauce. I do like the paper lantern decorations though.
